Leinster House is the largest and grandest townhouse built in Dublin in the 18th century. Begun in 1745 for James Fitzgerald, the 20th Earl of Kildare, to designs by Richard Castle. The Great Exhibition of 1853 was held on this lawn. In 1924 Leinster House was acquired as the seat of the newly established Oireachtais, or Government of Ireland, and was remodelled as the Dáil or parliament chamber
